National Tire Recycling Day — April 16th

This industry has never had a moment like this — and it should. Today we change that.

Recycle Your Tires Today

Tires don't
disappear.

They don't break down. They don't compress. And they can't just be sent to a landfill like other waste. Left unmanaged, used tires pile up — creating fire risks, environmental hazards, and long-term storage problems that communities are left to deal with.

300 million tires are scrapped in the U.S. every year. Most people don't think about where they go. Before recycling infrastructure existed, they piled up in stockpiles numbering in the hundreds of millions. Some of the fires they caused burned for months.

Tire recycling solved that. And the material it produces is everywhere — playgrounds, athletic tracks, road surfaces, re-cased truck tires. It's one of the great quiet success stories of the recycling industry.

Every other recyclable material has public awareness, education, and a reason to pay attention. Tires don't. National Tire Recycling Day is the first step toward changing that.

Why we coined
this day

National Tire Recycling Day doesn't exist without a story. Here's ours.

Over 30 years ago, Dave and Mary Ellen Campbell started Campbell Scrap Tire in Southeastern Ohio with a straightforward goal: give local businesses a reliable, responsible place to recycle used tires. What started as a small family operation grew into something much larger — not because of a grand strategy, but because the work mattered and the people behind it showed up every day.

Dave served in the Army during Vietnam. That same sense of duty carried over into how he and Mary Ellen ran their business — with integrity, with care for the community, and with a commitment to doing things right. They didn't just collect tires. They found ways to repurpose, resell, and reuse as much of each tire as possible.

In 2021, Tyrex Resources of Ohio acquired Campbell Scrap Tire. The employees, the management, and the Campbell family's daughter stayed on — because the legacy they built was worth continuing, not replacing.

"That legacy is a big part of why we made April 16th National Tire Recycling Day. Tyrex Resources has been doing this work for years, built on a foundation Dave and Mary Ellen Campbell laid over 30 years ago. Today we're proud to put a name on the calendar for an industry that's earned it."
