Our origin
Why we coined
this day
National Tire Recycling Day doesn't exist without a story. Here's ours.
Over 30 years ago, Dave and Mary Ellen Campbell started Campbell Scrap Tire in Southeastern Ohio with a straightforward goal: give local businesses a reliable, responsible place to recycle used tires. What started as a small family operation grew into something much larger — not because of a grand strategy, but because the work mattered and the people behind it showed up every day.
Dave served in the Army during Vietnam. That same sense of duty carried over into how he and Mary Ellen ran their business — with integrity, with care for the community, and with a commitment to doing things right. They didn't just collect tires. They found ways to repurpose, resell, and reuse as much of each tire as possible.
In 2021, Tyrex Resources of Ohio acquired Campbell Scrap Tire. The employees, the management, and the Campbell family's daughter stayed on — because the legacy they built was worth continuing, not replacing.
"That legacy is a big part of why we made April 16th National Tire Recycling Day. Tyrex Resources has been doing this work for years, built on a foundation Dave and Mary Ellen Campbell laid over 30 years ago. Today we're proud to put a name on the calendar for an industry that's earned it."
